Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh expressed frustration with punter JK Scott following Thursday night’s preseason loss to the San Francisco 49ers, citing what he viewed as a lack of effort on a defensive play. Scott failed to make an attempt to tackle 49ers returner Jacob Cowing, who took advantage of the opportunity to sprint 83 yards down the field with the ball.

Harbaugh made clear that while coaches understand not every play succeeds, deliberately avoiding participation crosses an unacceptable line. When asked if the team had instructed Scott to refrain from tackling to avoid injury, Harbaugh rejected the notion outright, saying Scott must commit to making the play whenever he finds himself in that position.

The coach attributed part of the problem to Scott’s punting mechanics, characterizing the kick as too short and poorly positioned. Scott, who ranked 10th across the NFL last season with a 47.8-yard average, had appeared to outkick his coverage on the play with a 52-yard boot, but Harbaugh remained focused on the missed tackle opportunity.

Scott did not address reporters following the game. Harbaugh indicated the team would address the defensive lapses during upcoming practice sessions, suggesting tackle drills will receive emphasis moving forward with his punter.
