The DSA Liberation Caucus, a Marxist-Leninist-Maoist faction within the Democratic Socialists of America, has formally rejected Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as a viable presidential candidate for 2028, contending that the New York representative has abandoned core socialist principles. In a written statement, the group declared it will not support or endorse any bid by Ocasio-Cortez for the nation’s highest office.
The Liberation Caucus leveled multiple criticisms at the congresswoman, accusing her of being an “opportunist” who has retreated from socialist politics. The group specifically objected to her vote supporting Israel’s right to exist and her participation in a House Democratic statement affirming Israel’s right to defensive systems, characterizing her positions as failures on Palestinian solidarity.
The faction also attacked Ocasio-Cortez for recent comments in which she walked back her 2020 support for defunding police, dismissing that era of progressive activism as “crazyyyyy” during an ABC interview. The statement argued she had trafficked in abolitionist rhetoric during her initial election victory but now renounces those same principles, calling her behavior inconsistent with socialist conviction.
The DSA Liberation Caucus, established in 2025, requires all candidates seeking the national organization’s formal endorsement to accept and promote its new platform known as “Workers Deserve More,” which calls for eliminating the Senate, presidency, and Supreme Court. The group stated flatly that supporting a “social democrat” leading an empire would constitute betrayal of socialist values.
Despite the national DSA’s opposition, the New York City chapter has repeatedly endorsed Ocasio-Cortez in her electoral races. The Liberation Caucus claimed the NYC chapter has suggested potentially breaking away from national DSA over disagreements regarding endorsements of the congresswoman. Ocasio-Cortez has not formally declared whether she will seek the presidency or Senate in 2028, though she currently polls as the leading choice among Democrats.
