Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York threw her support behind Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts on Tuesday as he campaigns for reelection against Rep. Seth Moulton in the state’s Democratic Senate primary. Ocasio-Cortez cited Markey’s record of championing working families and resisting corporate influence in her endorsement statement released through the Markey campaign.
“At a time when powerful special interests are making life harder for everyday Americans, Massachusetts working families need a champion in the U.S. Senate to stand up for them and fight corporate greed,” Ocasio-Cortez said. She highlighted Markey’s collaborative work on the Green New Deal and his decision to forgo corporate PAC contributions as reasons for her backing.
Markey reciprocated with praise for Ocasio-Cortez, calling her vision and leadership essential for difficult fights ahead. He emphasized their joint work on climate and economic reform, stating the two would continue their partnership to build an economy benefiting working people rather than corporations and billionaires.
The 80-year-old Markey has represented Massachusetts in the Senate since July 2013, following a 36-year tenure in the House. Moulton, 47, has served in the House since 2015. The Democratic primary election is scheduled for September 1, with early voting running August 22-28.
