The Democratic National Committee has narrowed its search for a 2028 presidential convention host city to three finalists: Boston, Denver and Philadelphia, party officials announced Thursday. The decision represents the latest step in preparations for the nominating convention, which will introduce the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee to voters and energize supporters heading into the general election campaign.
DNC Chairman Ken Martin praised each of the three contending cities for submitting “incredibly strong bids” in the selection process. Martin stated the convention would serve as an “inspiring celebration of our party’s future nominee,” signaling the party’s readiness to move forward following President Donald Trump’s return to office. Party leadership will make a final decision later this year to determine which city will host the event scheduled for August 7-10, 2028.
Atlanta and Chicago, which hosted the 2024 convention, were eliminated from consideration, though the DNC did not publicly explain the reasons for their removal. Committee officials conducted site visits to all five candidate cities during April and May, evaluating factors including logistical capabilities and fundraising potential. The three finalists share characteristics favorable to Democratic Party interests: all are located in reliably liberal urban centers surrounded by competitive suburban regions that have grown increasingly pivotal to the party’s electoral strategy.
Colorado and Massachusetts have consistently supported Democratic presidential candidates in recent elections, while Pennsylvania emerged as a crucial battleground state. Trump won Pennsylvania in the 2024 presidential race. Philadelphia previously hosted the convention in 2016, Denver in 2008 and Boston in 2004. Republicans have already selected Houston as the venue for their 2028 convention.
Meanwhile, Democrats are preparing for the 2026 midterm elections as an immediate priority, hoping to flip control of the narrowly Republican-led House and potentially reclaim Senate leadership. The party faces challenges including fundraising disadvantages compared to Republicans and existing financial obligations. Martin has weathered criticism over his leadership of the committee but has called for party unity as Democrats pursue both near-term midterm gains and long-term positioning for the 2028 presidential race.
