Prince Harry and Meghan Markle intend to relocate to a private residence outside London later this month with their two children, marking a significant shift six years after the couple departed from royal duties and established themselves in California. The move comes as their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, prepare to enroll in a British school in September, according to reporting from the BBC, The Telegraph, and The Sun.

King Charles III learned of the relocation plans on Sunday and has reportedly welcomed the prospect of spending increased private time with the Sussex family, the BBC reported. Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, have also been notified of the development, though the move is not expected to alter Harry and Meghan’s status within the royal family or result in them resuming official royal duties.

The planned return to Britain follows a July reunion between the Sussexes and Charles at Highgrove House in Gloucestershire, which marked the first in-person meeting between the king and his grandchildren Archie and Lilibet in over four years. Harry and Meghan had not visited the United Kingdom together since Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022, before departing royal life in 2020 and settling in Montecito, California.

Family tensions have intensified following public disclosures by the couple, including interviews, a Netflix documentary series, and Harry’s 2023 memoir “Spare,” in which they detailed longstanding grievances. A persistent impediment to Harry’s return has been security concerns; he lost a legal challenge in 2025 regarding police protection availability for himself and his family while in Britain, citing safety as a prior barrier to bringing his wife and children to the country.

Royal observers have cautioned that the relocation does not necessarily signal a reconciliation that would restore the couple to working royal status. According to Kinsey Schofield, host of the YouTube program “Kinsey Schofield Unfiltered,” Harry may find opportunities to support his relatives privately as a son and brother, distinct from any public role supporting the monarchy as an active working royal.
