A wave of left-leaning Democratic candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America advanced in primary elections nationwide this cycle, signaling shifting momentum within the party ahead of midterm races. The victories span New York, the Midwest, and prominently featured one of Florida’s most closely watched contests, where establishment frontrunners faced unexpected defeats from progressive challengers.

State lawmaker Angie Nixon delivered a stunning primary upset in Florida’s Democratic Senate race, soundly defeating retired Lt. Col. Alex Vindman, who had entered the contest as the presumed favorite. Despite being outspent 15-to-1, Nixon prevailed, attributing her victory to grassroots support from ordinary Floridians resisting establishment politics and outside spending. A member of the Democratic Socialists of America, Nixon joins an expanding cohort of DSA-affiliated progressives gaining traction in Democratic primaries.

Beyond Florida, similar left-leaning candidates secured primary victories in New York, Colorado, and Michigan across both House and Senate races. These gains demonstrate growing appeal among Democratic voters for candidates positioned further left within the party’s ideological spectrum.

Republicans have seized on the victories, with U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody, Nixon’s general election opponent, quickly launching attacks on socialist ideology. Moody framed Nixon and her allies as existential threats to national values and institutions, amplifying concerns about the DSA’s platform, which has included commemorations of former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.

Establishment Democrats have expressed reservations as well. South Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, facing her own reelection bid, rejected DSA socialism while acknowledging Nixon’s primary victory impressed observers. Wasserman Schultz emphasized that Democrats must focus on reducing living costs across housing, groceries, utilities, and healthcare to regain congressional control.
