Federal prosecutors allege that Larry Montes, 46, of the Bronx, explicitly stated his racial and religious bias during a recorded post-arrest interview following a violent disruption at Central Synagogue in Midtown Manhattan. According to the Justice Department, Montes made numerous antisemitic statements to investigators, declaring his actions were motivated by both race and religion.
The incident occurred during Shabbat services attended by approximately 375 congregants, when Montes allegedly stood up in the sanctuary and began shouting obscenities. He then struck and damaged two ceremonial silver candlesticks adorned with gold accents, authorities said.
As security personnel moved to remove Montes from the building, he allegedly punched a female congregant and assaulted a security guard who attempted to restrain him. Prosecutors claim Montes directed a racial slur at the Black security guard, spat in his face, and headbutted him in the eye socket before threatening to return.
Montes faces two federal counts of committing hate crimes and one count of destruction of religious property resulting in bodily injury, carrying a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison. He also faces state charges and remains in custody.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed concern over the attack, stating that all New Yorkers must be able to practice their faith safely. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch reported that both assault victims are recovering well.
