Chuck Gray, Wyoming’s Republican Secretary of State since 2023, secured the GOP nomination for the state’s single U.S. House seat on Tuesday, emerging victorious from a crowded primary field. The Trump-aligned conservative defeated businessman Steve Friess and Reid Rasner in the contest, setting himself up as the presumptive favorite in November’s general election.

The primary was triggered when incumbent Rep. Harriet Hageman abandoned her House seat to pursue the U.S. Senate position being vacated by retiring Sen. Cynthia Lummis. Hageman, who won her House race in 2022 after defeating former Rep. Liz Cheney in a high-profile primary, did not endorse in the House race, forcing candidates to compete directly for conservative voters without her backing.

The House contest became the most expensive primary race on Wyoming’s ballot despite the absence of endorsements from both Donald Trump and Hageman. Trump did intervene in other major state races, backing Hageman for Senate and state Superintendent Megan Degenfelder for governor.

Wyoming’s political landscape is heavily tilted toward Republicans, who hold every statewide office and command overwhelming majorities in the legislature. Trump won the state by nearly 46 percentage points in 2024, his largest margin nationally, and no Democrat has won statewide office there in more than three decades. The 2024 election cycle marks an unusual convergence, with the governorship, Senate seat, and House seat all open simultaneously for the first time in over 30 years.
