Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has resumed his duties with the team following his wife’s recovery from a shooting incident at their Virginia residence on July 26. Bieniemy initially departed the organization to be present with his family during the aftermath of the incident, which resulted in charges against the couple’s 27-year-old son, Elijah.

The coach returned to Kansas City ahead of the team’s preseason matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, with his wife’s medical progress serving as the primary catalyst for his decision to rejoin the squad. During a public statement on Tuesday, Bieniemy credited his spouse’s improvement in enabling his return to football, describing her condition as stable and her recovery trajectory as encouraging.

While away from the team, Bieniemy maintained involvement with Kansas City’s operations, attending practices remotely and participating in team meetings from Ashburn, Virginia. He remained sufficiently engaged to contact Chiefs general manager Brett Veach and coach Andy Reid with coaching observations and strategic suggestions about the team’s play-calling and personnel deployment.

Elijah Bieniemy faces charges of malicious wounding, felony firearm use, and illegal discharge of a weapon inside a residence. His legal proceedings remain suspended pending completion of a mental health evaluation.

Bieniemy previously served as offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders in 2023 and spent time coaching at UCLA and with the Chicago Bears before rejoining Kansas City as Matt Nagy’s replacement. Linebacker Nick Bolton expressed enthusiasm about the coordinator’s return, noting his competitive presence elevates the team’s performance.
