A Pompano Beach resident has been arrested and charged with two counts of child abuse following an alleged unprovoked assault on two children outside an apartment complex, law enforcement officials reported. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. Saturday when the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Enrique Diaz, emerged from his unit and approached the victims, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

The children told investigators they were positioned outside their residence when Diaz exited his apartment while holding a beer. Witnesses indicated the man appeared to stumble as he walked toward them before allegedly striking the first child on the head and slapping him, causing the child to flee indoors, according to arrest documents filed by deputies.

Diaz then turned his attention to a second child, whom he allegedly grabbed by the head while squeezing aggressively and subsequently slapped, inflicting pain, the arrest report states. Both children told authorities they had no prior interaction with Diaz beyond being neighbors and could not explain why they were targeted.

Diaz was released on a $5,000 bond for the child abuse charges but remains detained at the Broward Main Jail on an immigration hold. The Broward Sheriff’s Office withheld the specific apartment location to protect the victims’ identities.
