Authorities arrested a 45-year-old man Monday following an alleged intrusion at the Miami Seaquarium in which he was discovered spray-painting the facility’s announcer’s booth. Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the marine park just before noon after a security guard reported an active burglary in progress on the premises.
According to the arrest report, Paul Vargas arrived at the Seaquarium by bicycle and was initially spotted on surveillance footage by security personnel. Deputies entered the facility and located Vargas inside the Golden Dome at approximately 11:55 a.m., actively vandalizing the announcer’s booth with spray paint. Officers took him into custody at that time.
Vargas acknowledged to law enforcement that he had unlawfully entered the Seaquarium and damaged property within the structure. He was transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he faces one count of burglary of an unoccupied structure and one count of criminal mischief.
As of Tuesday morning, Vargas remained in custody at TGK with his bond status pending determination by the court. Jail records indicated no bond had yet been formally set in the case.
