Loui Ridi, a 46-year-old Palestinian American, returned to his home in the West Bank village of Qusra on Monday after Israeli settlers had surrounded the property for more than a week. Upon arrival Tuesday, Ridi confronted the settlers and demanded that Israeli military forces remove them from his land, but soldiers instead ordered him to remain inside, citing the area as a closed military zone.
Ridi’s attempt to reclaim his home revealed the limited effectiveness of military intervention in the region. Although Israeli soldiers asked settlers to leave the area, Ridi observed at least three settlers positioned close enough to pose an immediate threat to his family should the military depart, undermining any sense of security gained through his return.
Video footage captured Ridi confronting a settler on his property and labeling him a terrorist while demanding he vacate the premises. Israeli soldiers responded by instructing Ridi to go back inside while simultaneously appealing to settlers to leave peacefully, a pattern Ridi characterized as emblematic of the military’s inability or unwillingness to permanently clear the area of extremists.
The siege in Qusra represents the latest episode of settler violence in the occupied West Bank, where right-wing extremists emboldened by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government have escalated attacks on Palestinian communities. Palestinian officials report 87 Palestinians killed by Israeli settlers or soldiers this year, while three Israelis have been killed in related clashes.
Ridi, who resides with his family in Ohio but maintains property in Qusra, expressed concern that settlers would return within hours of military withdrawal and rebuild their encampments. He stated he cannot leave his home or purchase groceries without permission and has requested assistance from U.S. officials to guarantee safe passage for food and supplies.
The United States, Israel’s closest ally, has condemned the Qusra siege, now in its tenth day. President Donald Trump stated his opposition to Israeli annexation of the West Bank while signaling broad acceptance of settlements and lifting sanctions on settlers accused of violence at the start of his second term.
Ridi reported sleeping only four hours Tuesday in a shuttered room due to fear of rock-throwing settlers outside. His daughters in Ohio have remained awake past bedtime worrying about his safety, prompting him to reassure them falsely that conditions were secure.
