Residents of Kandersteg, a 1,300-person village nestled in Switzerland’s Bern canton, face an escalating geological threat as warming temperatures destabilize the Alpine landscape surrounding their homes. A mountainside formation known as Spitze Stei looms above the picturesque community, with scientists warning that thawing permafrost could trigger a catastrophic landslide comparable to the disaster that befell nearby Blatten just last year.

The Spitze Stei rock mass, estimated at roughly 15 to 20 million cubic meters, has become increasingly unstable as frozen soil and rock that once held the mountain together begins to melt. In May 2025, a similar event devastated Blatten when a massive collapse of rock and ice descended the Loetschental valley, burying the evacuated village in mud and debris.

Markus Stoffel, a climate change and natural risks professor at the University of Geneva, explained that melting ice within mountain terrain acts as a binding agent that keeps slopes intact. “Once this ice is melting, it acts like a cement. These mountain slopes will become increasingly unstable,” Stoffel said, linking the phenomenon directly to rising global temperatures.

While Kandersteg residents acknowledge the danger, many maintain a measured perspective. Local inhabitant Brigitte Jüni stated that authorities have implemented appropriate safeguards, though she recognized the unpredictability of natural forces. Experts indicate the rock formation is more likely to fragment gradually than collapse in one catastrophic event, with continuous monitoring and evacuation protocols in place.

Climate scientists warn that Alpine communities face mounting risks as permafrost degradation accelerates. Greenpeace Switzerland energy expert Nathan Solothurnmann cautioned that intensifying landslides and avalanches may eventually force abandonment of certain valleys, with protective infrastructure costs potentially exceeding the economic viability of continued habitation.
