Terry Moran, who recently departed ABC News, acknowledged Friday that the network carried a liberal institutional bias that undermined its ability to fairly cover President Donald Trump. Speaking on “The Fifth Column” podcast, Moran attributed the problem to insufficient ideological diversity among newsroom staff members.
When directly asked whether ABC News constitutes a liberal institution, Moran responded affirmatively and explained that the issue affected Trump coverage specifically. He noted that the newsroom’s limited political perspective created a significant blind spot, observing that most staff had not supported Trump in elections.
Moran said he had circulated internal communications urging the network to approach Trump coverage with greater fairness. According to Moran, some staff members, including engineers and producers, privately thanked him for raising the concern, suggesting dissatisfaction existed within the organization.
ABC declined to renew Moran’s contract after he posted commentary on social media describing Trump and White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller as “world-class haters.” The network characterized the post as a violation of its editorial policies and reaffirmed its commitment to impartial reporting standards.
An ABC News employee told Fox News Digital that Moran had experienced internal friction with colleagues over his editorial approach but that the social media post left management with limited alternatives. The staffer emphasized the network’s concern that allowing the controversy to persist could further erode viewer trust amid broader skepticism of legacy media institutions.
During his podcast appearance, Moran distinguished between fairness and objectivity while discussing appropriate journalistic coverage of Trump. He asserted that absolute objectivity cannot exist in journalism but maintained that his ABC News work met rigorous fairness standards.
Moran’s departure followed a contentious Oval Office interview with Trump less than six weeks earlier, during which the president criticized the questioning and accused Moran of pursuing “fake questions.”
