Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and chief U.S. negotiator, held talks Sunday with Hamas leadership in Cairo as part of a renewed diplomatic push to revive stalled ceasefire negotiations in Gaza. The high-level engagement marks a significant moment in efforts to advance a 15-point American-backed framework designed to facilitate Hamas disarmament and Israeli withdrawal from the war-torn enclave.
Kushner attended the Cairo meeting alongside fellow envoy Steve Witkoff and representatives from mediating nations Egypt, Qatar and Turkey. Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya led the Palestinian delegation at the session, which focused on securing the militant group’s commitment to the proposed peace roadmap before Kushner’s scheduled Monday meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The ceasefire framework has languished for more than 10 months, with roughly 2 million Gaza residents caught in the standoff. A key sticking point involves Hamas’s demand that Israel halt military operations and pull back to the so-called yellow line before implementation begins, while Netanyahu insists Israel will maintain security control until Hamas is fully disarmed.
Netanyahu publicly rejected the 15-point plan last week, a rare rebuke of the Trump administration. However, regional powers including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Pakistan and Indonesia issued a joint statement Sunday accusing Israel of obstructing peace efforts and calling on the U.S. and international mediators to take concrete action to prevent implementation delays.
Hamas officials indicated the group remains committed to the roadmap and awaits the start of a 14-day negotiation period to establish implementation timelines. Under the proposed agreement, Hamas would gradually surrender weapons to a Palestinian technocratic committee while Israeli forces withdraw from Gaza, though Netanyahu has rejected linking any Israeli pullback to Palestinian statehood.
