Four Renaissance Masterpieces Stolen From Sicilian Museum During Italian Holiday

Thieves breached security and alarm systems at the MuMe regional museum in Messina, Sicily on Saturday evening, making off with four significant Renaissance artworks during the Italian Ferragosto holiday, according to reports from news agency LaPresse on Sunday. The heist netted three panels from the San Gregorio Polyptych, created in 1473, and a double-sided devotional panel depicting the Virgin Mary and Christ in Pietà that had been housed in an armored display case.

Museum director Marisa Mercurio described the loss as devastating to the institution and the broader cultural community, characterizing the stolen works as among Antonello da Messina’s most significant and recognized creations. The theft occurred shortly before 10 p.m., Mercurio told the ANSA news agency.

Art-crime analyst Lynda Albertson, chief executive of the ARCA art crimes research association, cautioned that the works’ fame presents a major obstacle for potential sale through legitimate channels. Albertson told La Repubblica that such recognizable masterpieces typically circulate among criminal networks as collateral for illicit transactions rather than being sold openly.

The theft follows by days a recovery operation in Parma, where police announced the retrieval of three stolen paintings by Renoir, Cézanne and Matisse valued at approximately 10 million euros from a March 22-23 theft at the Magnani Rocca Foundation. Five individuals have been detained in connection with that case.
