Paris Saint-Germain strengthened its offensive arsenal Saturday by acquiring Ferran Torres from Barcelona, the Spanish winger penning a five-year agreement with the French powerhouse. The Champions League defending champion announced the transfer without disclosing terms, though L’Equipe reported PSG paid 50 million euros ($58 million) for the 26-year-old’s services. Torres will don the club’s No. 9 jersey.
Torres etched his name into World Cup lore by delivering Spain’s decisive goal during extra time in last year’s final against Argentina, a left-footed strike that found the net after he entered the match as a second-half substitute. He attributed the momentous goal to collective Spanish effort, remarking it was “scored by 47 million people,” referencing his nation’s population. The goal represented his sole contribution in the tournament’s scoring column.
The transfer marks Torres’s second marquee move in recent years after Barcelona recruited him from Manchester City in January 2022 for approximately 55 million euros. He previously developed his craft at Valencia before his 2020 switch to City. During his Barcelona tenure, Torres recorded 65 goals across 207 appearances, including a career peak of 21 goals last season across all competitions, primarily operating as a roaming forward rather than a prolific finisher.
Torres reunites with PSG manager Luis Enrique, who granted the player his international debut in 2020 while coaching Spain’s national team. Since arriving at PSG in 2023, Enrique has captured back-to-back Champions League titles and the French league championship in each of his three seasons. PSG also boasts Ballon d’Or recipient Ousmane Dembélé, whom Torres briefly played alongside at Barcelona.
The acquisition expands PSG’s already formidable attacking options under Enrique, including Désiré Doué, Bradley Barcola, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and summer signing Maghnes Akliouche. PSG defeated Aston Villa 2-1 in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, becoming the first club to claim back-to-back Super Cup titles since Real Madrid in 2016 and 2017.
