The Miami Dolphins opened their 2026 preseason campaign with a 20-7 loss to the Washington Commanders on Friday evening at Northwest Stadium. While the team’s first-string offense and defense provided encouraging moments, the backup units faltered down the stretch as Washington pulled away in the second half.
Miami’s opening drive set an optimistic tone for the contest. Quarterback Malik Willis connected with receiver Malik Washington and running back De’Von Achane before orchestrating a 14-play, 93-yard scoring march capped by Achane’s 1-yard touchdown plunge. Third-round draft pick Caleb Douglas made a spectacular one-handed, left-handed catch for 28 yards earlier in the drive, showcasing the type of production the Dolphins hope for from their 2026 selections.
The starting defense also made its presence felt early. Linebacker Tyrel Dodson delivered a hard hit on Commanders backup quarterback Marcus Mariota that forced the latter from the game. Cornerback Marco Wilson recorded the game’s first turnover for Miami on a third-string quarterback Sam Hartman pass intended for Dyami Brown.
Washington’s second-half surge proved decisive. Running back Robert Henry Jr. scored on a 22-yard touchdown run to put the Commanders ahead, and Kaytron Allen added a 1-yard touchdown before halftime to extend the lead to 17-7. Miami’s backup quarterbacks struggled significantly: Quinn Ewers finished 1 of 8 for 27 yards and an interception, while Cam Miller was 3 of 11 for 39 yards and two interceptions.
The Dolphins’ run defense allowed 170-plus rushing yards on 41 carries after the starters departed. Henry finished with 10 carries for 66 yards and a touchdown, exposing a potential weakness along Miami’s defensive line as the preseason progresses.
Willis completed 4 of 5 passes for 43 yards in his debut with the Dolphins, while Achane accumulated 39 yards on seven carries. The offensive line, featuring first-round pick Kadyn Proctor, opened running lanes effectively during Miami’s successful opening possession.
Miami will host the New York Giants on August 22 at Hard Rock Stadium as the preseason continues.
