Hapoel Tel Aviv of Israel’s Premier League progressed to the next round of the UEFA Conference League after eliminating Poland’s GKS Katowice on Wednesday, despite losing the individual match 2-1. The Israeli club’s advancement came through aggregate scoring, having secured a 2-0 victory in their first meeting on August 6 for a combined 3-2 advantage over two legs.
Following the conclusion of the match, multiple GKS Katowice supporters were observed making Nazi salutes directed toward Hapoel Tel Aviv fans. UEFA said the conduct is under active review as officials determine whether disciplinary measures will be taken against the club or its supporters.
Separate footage from the stadium also captured instances of Hapoel Tel Aviv fans engaging in vulgar gestures toward opposing supporters. UEFA’s investigation is examining all reported incidents from the encounter.
Hapoel Tel Aviv will next face Italy’s Serie A club Atalanta on August 20 in the competition’s ongoing rounds. The UEFA Conference League, the third-tier European soccer tournament, concludes its next phase on August 27, with 36 remaining teams competing for advancement to the Europa League.
