A 32-year-old man entered a not guilty plea Wednesday following a grand jury’s decision to indict him on murder charges in connection with the fatal stabbing of his two parents. The indictment, which was returned July 20 and made public Wednesday, alleges the defendant killed actor-director Rob Reiner, 78, and photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner, 70, at their Brentwood residence on December 14, 2025.
The grand jury charged the defendant with two counts of murder and included special circumstance allegations involving multiple murders and lying in wait. Prosecutors also contend he personally wielded a knife during the attacks. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman characterized the case as involving a profound breach of trust. “The indictment unsealed today also adds a special circumstance allegation that the defendant committed the murders by means of lying in wait,” Hochman stated.
Law enforcement arrested the defendant the same evening at Exposition Park. He remains in custody without bail and is scheduled for a court appearance on September 15. A conviction on all charges could result in a life sentence without the possibility of parole or capital punishment, though prosecutors have not yet determined whether to pursue the death penalty.
