Meteor Streaks Brighten South Florida Skies Before Dawn Wednesday

A series of meteor streaks illuminated the predawn sky over Miami on Wednesday, providing an unexpected spectacle for residents and news staff at Local 10 News. The celestial display caught the attention of meteorologist Saira Anwer during a traffic report, after newscast director Darby Patton first identified the activity and alerted the station’s team to capture the phenomenon live on camera.

The meteor activity occurred as South Florida prepared for another sweltering August day, with temperatures already in the low to mid-80s before sunrise and heat index values climbing into the 90s. A heat advisory was issued for Miami-Dade and Broward counties from noon through 7 p.m. by the National Weather Service, with highs expected to reach the low 90s and feel-like temperatures approaching triple digits.

Local 10 meteorologist Julie Durda indicated that reduced wind activity would confine most storm development to inland portions of Broward and Miami-Dade counties, particularly areas west of the Florida Turnpike. Coastal regions and areas near or east of Interstate 95 were forecast to remain predominantly dry throughout the day.

Durda advised residents to implement heat precautions as afternoon temperatures and humidity levels intensify, warning that the combined effects can create hazardous conditions. Under ideal viewing circumstances with minimal light pollution and clear skies, strong meteor showers can produce 30 to 40 meteors per hour at peak activity, though actual visibility depends on weather conditions and geographic location.
