The Cincinnati Reds mounted a dramatic late-inning rally to defeat the Chicago White Sox 5-4 in 10 innings Tuesday night, ending a three-game losing streak. Elly De La Cruz delivered the decisive blow with a sacrifice fly that scored automatic runner Matt McLain in the top of the tenth frame.
Cincinnati’s comeback began in the eighth inning when the club trailed by three runs. Bryan Hudson gave up an RBI single to De La Cruz, while Tyler Stephenson followed with a bases-loaded single off Grant Taylor that knotted the score. The White Sox could not withstand the late-game pressure despite a strong pitching performance from starter Sean Burke, who allowed just one run on three hits over seven innings.
Brock Burke earned the victory with his relief appearance, while Sean Newcomb took the loss. Emilio Pagan secured his 14th save of the season with a perfect tenth inning. The White Sox drew 38,113 fans to Guaranteed Rate Field for their ninth sellout of the season, highlighted by a unique team-branded papal-style hat giveaway honoring Pope Leo XIV, a lifelong White Sox fan who attended Game 1 of the 2005 World Series as Father Robert Prevost.
White Sox batter Brenton Doyle launched a 415-foot home run off Nick Lodolo’s first pitch, marking his fourth career leadoff homer and the sixth for Chicago this season. Edgar Quero and Miguel Vargas also contributed solo shots for the White Sox. Eugenio Suarez homered for Cincinnati, his 17th of the season and third in four games.
Lodolo, recently activated from the injured list due to a blister, lasted four innings while allowing four runs on five hits in his first start since July 11. Burke, the White Sox starter, struck out eight batters without walking any while scattering three hits across seven innings. Muneteka Murakami extended his on-base streak to 26 games with a double in the eighth.
The clubs will continue their series Wednesday when Cincinnati’s Rhett Lowder (4-7, 5.26 ERA) faces White Sox right-hander Luis Castillo (3-9, 5.30 ERA).
