President Donald Trump traveled to Ohio on Tuesday evening for the final competition of the 2026 Patriot Games, bringing ESPN personality and former NFL punter Pat McAfee along for the occasion. The gathering of two polarizing public figures—one in politics and one in sports media—drew immediate attention given McAfee’s prominent role at the sports broadcasting network.
McAfee greeted Trump as Air Force One touched down in the Midwest, dressed casually in jeans, a T-shirt, sneakers, and a backward-facing baseball cap. As Trump descended the aircraft into steady rainfall, he held an umbrella in one hand while pointing toward McAfee with the other, with McAfee reciprocating the gesture from the tarmac.
The Patriot Games, held at SPIRE Academy in Geneva, Ohio, represents a national youth athletic competition featuring competitors ages 14 to 17 from all 50 states, U.S. territories, and tribal nations. The White House described Trump’s attendance as part of broader efforts “to celebrate 250 years of American Independence by honoring the excellence, grit and competitive spirit of America’s youth,” with a $250,000 scholarship prize pool dividing between one male and one female champion.
McAfee’s participation in the event alongside Trump may trigger internal discussion at ESPN, given the network’s historical positioning and the broadcaster’s previous decision to host Trump on his show last November. McAfee sat adjacent to the president during the competition and applauded when attendees cheered in Trump’s direction.
