CBS Sports Leadership Offers No Timeline on Tony Romo’s Status Following Drunk Driving Arrest

Tony Romo’s employment situation at CBS Sports remains uncertain as the network continues its assessment following his arrest on an operating while intoxicated charge. CBS Sports President David Berson provided limited details during “NFL on CBS” Media Day on Tuesday, stating that officials have reached no conclusions and established no timeline for resolution. Berson characterized the matter as both personal and legal, requesting patience as the evaluation continues.

The broadcaster was placed on indefinite leave after Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested him in July for impaired driving while returning from a golf event in Wisconsin. Romo faces charges including operating while intoxicated, possessing an open container of alcohol in his vehicle, and unsafe passing following a failed field sobriety test. His court appearance is scheduled for September 21, just eight days after CBS begins its 2026 NFL season broadcast schedule.

Berson explained the network’s decision to suspend Romo by citing concerns about the company’s public image and brand reputation. He noted that CBS maintains a deep roster of talent capable of stepping into leadership roles and that the focus must remain on the quality of the network’s football coverage. J.J. Watt has been named as the lead analyst alongside play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz for upcoming broadcasts.

Romo signed a 10-year, $180 million contract with CBS in 2020 and remains owed approximately $72 million under the agreement. Industry sources indicate the contract includes a standard morals clause that could allow CBS to terminate his employment, though his legal representatives would likely contest any such action given the remaining financial obligations. Prior to the arrest, questions had already surfaced about whether the network would retain Romo as its primary analyst beyond the 2026 season.
