The Global Empowerment Mission, a humanitarian organization headquartered in Doral, dispatched relief personnel to western Colombia on Monday in response to a 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the country’s Chocó region. The tremor’s epicenter was located in San José del Palmar, a municipality in the Pacific coastal area home to Colombia’s largest concentration of economically disadvantaged Black communities.
Michael Capponi, founder and president of GEM, outlined the organization’s strategy for maximizing aid efficiency in the earthquake-affected region. The nonprofit intends to procure food and supplies locally rather than transporting them from abroad, reducing logistical constraints and delivery times to impacted populations.
The relief effort will focus on distributing essential survival equipment, including thousands of tents, sleeping bags, blankets, and camping gear to residents displaced from their homes. GEM previously deployed personnel in Venezuela following consecutive earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitudes on June 24.
