The San Francisco 49ers kept All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey sidelined from Monday’s practice session, citing general tightness as the reason for his absence. The decision marked the first time the 30-year-old had missed a practice this offseason as San Francisco carefully monitors his conditioning ahead of the regular season.
Offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak downplayed any concerns about McCaffrey’s status, characterizing the situation as part of a calculated management strategy. Kubiak noted that the team has adjusted its training camp schedule to prevent extended stretches of consecutive full-contact sessions while keeping McCaffrey’s repetition count aligned with organizational goals.
San Francisco loaded McCaffrey with 413 touches from scrimmage during the 2025 regular season, leading the entire NFL in that statistical category. The organization has prioritized identifying a dependable backup to distribute the workload, but injuries have decimated the running back depth chart heading into camp.
Rookies Kaelon Black and Isaac Guerendo, along with second-year running back Jordan James, have all been unavailable due to injuries sustained during the offseason and early training camp. Patrick Taylor Jr., Sincere McCormick and Khalil Herbert assumed primary responsibility for running back duties on Monday as backups.
Kubiak expressed frustration about the circumstances but emphasized that the opportunity provided developmental experience to other roster members. The team continues utilizing receiver Deebo Samuel in the backfield to add explosiveness to its offensive scheme.
Defensive end Nick Bosa also missed his fourth consecutive practice with soreness as he works back from a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained in Week 3 of last season. Head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated the team maintains confidence in Bosa’s eventual return without immediate concern about his availability.
