The discovery of Tasia Fortune’s body hanging in the backyard of an abandoned residence in Jackson, Mississippi, on August 3 has prompted intense scrutiny of local law enforcement practices and raised alarm across the community where she lived. Jackson police have offered limited details about the circumstances surrounding the death of the 29-year-old mother of four, stating only that investigators are actively working to establish what occurred. Her body remains with the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office pending autopsy results.
Fortune had resided in Mississippi for more than a decade and was visiting Kentucky for a family reunion when she was last seen by her mother, Christy Spivey, on July 26. Spivey told ABC News that her daughter was behaving normally and expressed confidence in her account of events, declaring publicly that Fortune did not take her own life. A week after the discovery, mourners left flowers, balloons, and teddy bears at a memorial erected behind the residence in the predominantly Black neighborhood.
Police have disclosed no suspects or persons of interest in the case. Investigators interviewed a man who acknowledged arguing with Fortune but denied involvement in her death; the individual was arrested on a separate firearms charge but authorities have not clarified the nature of his relationship to Fortune.
Fortune’s death marks the third unexplained hanging in Mississippi within less than a year. Cleveland authorities ruled the 2023 death of 21-year-old Trey Reed, a Delta State University student, a suicide, a conclusion that alarmed his family and attorneys who demanded independent autopsy findings and security camera footage. The state medical examiner similarly determined that Cory Zukatis, an unhoused man in his 30s found hanging in Vicksburg, died by suicide.
The cases have intensified scrutiny of Mississippi’s law enforcement given the state’s fraught civil rights history. Recent attention has also focused on the death of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells, whose body was discovered two days after he disappeared during a Fourth of July boat trip to an island off the Gulf Coast; his parents continue to question conflicting accounts surrounding his death.
Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes petitioned Mississippi U.S. Attorney Baxter Kruger for federal assistance in Fortune’s case, referring to her as a murder victim in his letter issued on Wednesday. Spivey told ABC News she does not want her daughter’s case characterized as racially motivated, though national figures have called for careful handling of the investigation. Berniece King, daughter of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., urged caution against premature conclusions while acknowledging the historical weight these circumstances carry for Black communities.
