Don Nelson, one of professional basketball’s most accomplished coaches and a five-time NBA champion during his playing career, died Sunday at age 86. Nelson’s Hall of Fame legacy includes his tenure as head coach across four franchises spanning three decades.
Nelson amassed 1,335 regular season victories across 31 seasons as an NBA head coach, ranking him second all-time in wins when measured against his peers. He guided the Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors in two separate stints, New York Knicks, and Dallas Mavericks throughout his coaching career.
Beyond his coaching accomplishments, Nelson earned induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and maintained a decorated playing record as a five-time NBA champion. His contributions to the sport spanned more than five decades as both a competitor and strategist.
