More than 60 Democratic lawmakers have initiated a formal inquiry into the Trump administration’s deportation efforts targeting military service members and their relatives. The investigation was prompted by an Associated Press report documenting over 50 active-duty service members’ spouses and parents detained by immigration officials.
In a letter to the Department of Homeland Security, Defense Department, and Veterans Affairs, Democrats questioned whether Pentagon and DHS officials are collaborating to remove troops’ family members from the country. The lawmakers alleged such actions undermine military readiness, damage morale, and contradict longstanding commitments to those who serve.
Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who is leading the probe alongside Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal and Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth, condemned the administration’s approach. Warren characterized the deportations as “cruel” and warned they threaten both military effectiveness and personnel retention.
The AP’s investigation found that Trump’s administration has rescinded protections previously extended to military families and departed from bipartisan policy norms. Service members have been forced to take emergency leave and delay deployments to manage childcare after spouses’ detention.
The Defense Department declined substantive comment but pledged to respond directly to lawmakers. DHS stated that military service does not automatically confer immigration status or exemption from enforcement of immigration laws.
Danitza James, president of Repatriate Our Patriots, which assists military families facing deportation, said service members feel abandoned. She emphasized that troops sacrifice their lives with the expectation that government protects their families.
