Lawmakers are advancing a bill known as Jacob’s Law that would establish heightened criminal consequences for adults whose reckless actions result in a child’s death. The measure emerged following the fatal shooting of a 12-year-old boy in the Bronx who was struck by a stray bullet.
The proposed legislation aims to close gaps in existing criminal statutes by ensuring that such cases receive appropriate punishment severity. Supporters argue current law does not adequately address deaths caused by adult negligence or recklessness when children are the victims.
The bill’s name reflects the identity of the young victim at the center of the incident that prompted its introduction. If enacted, Jacob’s Law would distinguish between intentional homicide and deaths resulting from dangerous adult conduct, applying stronger sentencing guidelines to the latter category.
