North Dakota Woman Charged With Murder in Deaths of Two Young Children

A 22-year-old North Dakota woman has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of her two young children on Thursday. Kailey Erhart allegedly killed her 5-month-old and 3-year-old children following an incident in which she brandished a firearm and made threats of self-harm, according to law enforcement officials.

The third child, age 1, survived the attack but sustained severe injuries requiring surgical intervention. Authorities have not disclosed the current medical condition of the surviving child. The incident occurred at a residential location where the children’s father and grandmother were also present.

Mandan Police Chief Jason Ziegler characterized the crime scene as among the most disturbing his department’s officers will encounter in their careers. At a press conference, Ziegler acknowledged the profound impact on first responders, noting that the experience ranks among the most traumatic incidents law enforcement will face.

Earlier on the day of the killings, Erhart had threatened her estranged husband with a gun she had recently purchased. The man disarmed her during a physical altercation, then dismantled the weapon and scattered its components. Erhart bit and scratched him during the struggle, authorities said.

The children’s grandmother witnessed Erhart chasing her and the father from the residence with a knife immediately before the alleged attacks, police reported. The surviving family members were not physically injured during that portion of the incident.

Erhart faces nine charges including two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and multiple counts of aggravated assault and terrorizing. A judge set her bail at $3 million and issued formal no-contact orders preventing her from communicating with survivors and family members.

Her preliminary hearing and arraignment are scheduled for October 6. A fundraising campaign created to support the surviving child and father had generated more than $25,000 by Sunday evening, with donations continuing as the family navigates the aftermath of the tragedy.
