Michael Brennan seized his opportunity on Sunday at Greensboro, North Carolina, firing a 6-under 64 to win the Wyndham Championship and punch his ticket to the PGA Tour postseason. Brennan’s victory marks his second title in two years on the circuit and comes after a disappointing regular season that saw him enter the final event ranked No. 105 in the FedEx Cup standings with just one top-10 finish.
The 24-year-old Virginia native stormed past Beau Hossler during the middle rounds, stringing together five consecutive birdies beginning at the fourth hole, all from inside 8 feet. This stretch transformed Brennan’s position from one shot behind into a three-shot advantage by the turn after Hossler stumbled with a bogey on nine.
Brennan closed at 22-under 258, matching the tournament record at Sedgefield Country Club, and finished strong with a birdie on the 18th hole. His mother celebrated the victory on the green, reminding him that the win also secured his invitation to the Masters, where he made his debut earlier this year after winning the Bank of Utah Championship last fall.
Jackson Koivun narrowly claimed the 70th and final spot in the FedEx Cup playoffs despite closing with a 1-over 71. The Auburn transfer, who won the 3M Open in just his third professional start two months ago, secured his postseason berth by eight points after nearly stumbling down the stretch with several competitors still in contention.
High-profile players fell short of advancing, including Brooks Koepka, the first PGA Tour member to return from LIV Golf. Koepka finished tied for 67th and acknowledged his struggles on the greens while expressing frustration about missing the postseason during what he described as the prime of his career.
The FedEx Cup playoffs commence Thursday with the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee. Only the top 70 players qualify, with Brennan jumping to No. 47 in the standings following his championship performance.
