Major Networks Largely Overlook Democratic Senate Candidate’s Campaign Ties to Controversial Streamer

Abdul el-Sayed’s victory in the Michigan Democratic primary has renewed questions about media coverage of his campaign association with Hasan Piker, a Twitch streamer and podcaster known for provocative statements. El-Sayed has campaigned alongside Piker but declined to formally repudiate him when questioned about the relationship. As el-Sayed moves toward a general election matchup against Republican Mike Rogers, the extent of broadcast network scrutiny remains limited.

Piker has made numerous inflammatory statements, including claims that America deserved the September 11 terrorist attacks and praise for former Chinese leader Mao Zedong as “one of the great leaders of this world.” He has also expressed support for Hamas and stated he would vote for the militant group over Israel. In 2025, Twitch suspended Piker for advocating violence against a Republican senator.

NBC Nightly News provided rare direct reporting on the issue, with correspondent Shaquille Brewster noting el-Sayed’s refusal to disavow Piker’s positions. However, other networks employed more ambiguous language. NBC’s Garrett Haake framed Republican criticism as “painting him as an extremist,” while ABC’s Rachel Scott described el-Sayed as facing charges of communist sympathies without substantial detail about Piker’s actual statements.

When CNN’s Kaitlan Collins interviewed el-Sayed, she included comments from Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman stating he could not unite with someone embracing pro-Hamas positions. El-Sayed responded by deflecting focus away from his campaign associates toward voters he was targeting. The New York Times has published multiple favorable profiles and opinion pieces about Piker in recent years.
