The New York Yankees mounted an unlikely ninth-inning comeback Friday night, with Ben Rice delivering a crucial single to tie the game before Ryan McMahon’s sacrifice fly won it in the 10th inning. The Yankees defeated the Atlanta Braves 3-2 in a contest delayed by rain that extended past midnight.
Atlanta’s pitching dominated through most of the evening. Max Fried, working against his former team, allowed no runs across 6 1/3 innings, while Tyler Mahle matched that effort with six scoreless frames in his debut with the Braves. The Atlanta offense broke through when Austin Riley homered in the eighth inning and Matt Olson added a solo shot in the ninth, giving the Braves a commanding 2-0 advantage.
With two outs remaining and the Yankees facing elimination, Austin Wells doubled off All-Star closer Raisel Iglesias to drive in a run. After Amed Rosario drew a walk, Rice delivered on a 1-0 changeup, striking a single off the right-field fence to knot the score at two apiece.
The extra inning proved decisive for New York, as McMahon’s fly ball brought home the winning run to secure the Yankees’ victory.
