Steve Smith Sr. Expresses Bewilderment Over Brandon Aiyuk’s Self-Destructive Behavior With 49ers

Hall of Famer Steve Smith Sr. finds himself just as confused as the broader NFL community regarding the ongoing saga surrounding San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. During an appearance on OutKick’s “Don’t @ Me with Dan Dakich,” the five-time Pro Bowl selection admitted to being at a loss when attempting to understand the 28-year-old’s recent conduct and social media activity.

Aiyuk’s relationship with San Francisco deteriorated significantly in 2024 after the organization voided his guaranteed 2026 salary, claiming the receiver failed to meet obligations related to rehabilitation from an October 2024 ACL injury. The situation worsened as Aiyuk posted cryptic messages on social media and appeared to take indirect shots at head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Smith emphasized that something deeper appears troubling the wide receiver, though he hesitated to speculate about Aiyuk’s mental state. “There’s clearly something going on, and I don’t want to say in his head because that could come off very judgmental, but there’s obviously something going on in his heart that’s not aligning with what his picture is seeing of how his career is starting to go,” Smith stated.

The veteran analyst urged Aiyuk’s inner circle to intervene and help the receiver refocus on realistic career objectives. According to Smith, Aiyuk’s current trajectory constitutes self-sabotage, particularly given his exceptional abilities as a professional football player.

Meanwhile, Aiyuk has faced a California misdemeanor charge for exhibition of speed after filming himself speeding near the 49ers facility. He also posted Instagram Stories suggesting interest in joining the Washington Commanders before engaging in a public dispute with former Arizona State teammate Jayden Daniels that seemingly ended that possibility.

Smith expressed hope that Aiyuk will seek assistance before his professional prospects deteriorate beyond recovery. The two-time All-Pro noted that while many NFL players have engaged in worse behavior and remained employed, the wide receiver risks becoming unemployed if he does not alter his current path.

Aiyuk appeared poised for stardom after the 2023 season, when he recorded 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns. He subsequently signed a four-year, $120 million contract extension with San Francisco, but has since appeared in only seven games in 2024 before sustaining his season-ending injury and has not returned to competition.
