Mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor is beginning his recovery after an ACL injury cut short his return to professional competition on July 11. McGregor’s bout against Max Holloway lasted just 69 seconds before referee Mike Beltran stopped the fight due to the knee injury. The damage occurred despite McGregor’s aggressive opening, which included multiple kicks before he appeared to slip and sustain the initial injury.
McGregor posted a video message on social media announcing that his surgical repair had been completed successfully. “My knee is repaired, surgery was a success, and I’m on the road to recovery,” he stated, adding that his determination remained unwavering. He cited former athletes including fighters Dominick Cruz and Georges St. Pierre, as well as NFL figures Tom Brady and Adrian Peterson, as examples of comebacks that would motivate his own rehabilitation.
The injury marked McGregor’s first fight since July 2021, when he suffered a different leg injury in a loss to Dustin Poirier. McGregor has won only one fight since 2020, with the latest setback occurring unexpectedly during an otherwise healthy training camp leading up to the July 11 matchup.
