Law enforcement arrested a man accused of fatally shooting a 19-year-old nursing student during Independence Day festivities in Compton, officials said Monday. Authorities contend the suspect fired at individuals he believed were gang members, striking the student instead.
The victim, a nursing school enrollee, was killed at the scene during the July Fourth gathering. Her death represented one of two homicides that unfolded at the event, according to police reports.
No arrest has been made in the second fatal shooting that occurred at the same celebration. Detectives continue investigating both incidents as part of an active inquiry.
The shootings have intensified scrutiny over firearm violence at public celebrations across Los Angeles County. Local residents mourned the loss of a young woman whose educational and professional prospects were cut short.
