Chelsea Gray delivered two clutch three-pointers in pivotal moments Thursday night as the defending WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces rallied past the Indiana Fever 86-84 in overtime. Gray’s first buzzer-beater forced the extra period after the Fever held a three-point lead with seconds remaining in regulation, while her second game-winner came with the Aces trailing 86-84 in overtime. Both shots withstood replay review challenges.
Caitlin Clark’s uncharacteristic late-game miscues proved decisive in the outcome. The Fever star missed consecutive free throws with seven seconds left in regulation while Indiana led by three, then turned the ball over with seven seconds remaining in overtime when the Fever held a one-point advantage. Clark finished with 20 points and eight assists alongside eight turnovers for Indiana.
A’ja Wilson anchored Las Vegas with 26 points, 13 rebounds and a crucial defensive stop against Clark that set up Gray’s winning shot. Jackie Young contributed 22 points for the Aces, including a franchise record 15 consecutive points spanning the end of the first half and start of the second half. Gray added 11 points while connecting on three three-pointers total.
Las Vegas mounted a remarkable comeback from a 20-point first-half deficit, closing the opening period on a 15-0 run to trim a 42-22 disadvantage to 42-37. Indiana initially controlled the fourth quarter, rallying from a 64-55 deficit with 6:16 remaining to lead 75-72 before Gray’s heroics took over.
Kelsey Mitchell paced the Fever with 28 points, though she missed a crucial late free throw in regulation. Aliyah Boston contributed 21 points and 12 rebounds for Indiana. The Aces won the matchup despite trailing at the end of both regulation and overtime.
Security briefly removed a woman seated courtside near the Aces bench during the third quarter with 4:38 remaining, stopping play for several minutes. The woman was later returned to her seat while two men seated nearby were ejected. The reason for the removals remained unclear.
Las Vegas travels to Minnesota on Saturday while Indiana visits Chicago in their respective next contests.
