Eric Bieniemy, the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, is balancing professional responsibilities with a devastating family emergency after his son allegedly shot his wife on July 26. Mia Bieniemy, 57, was struck multiple times at their Ashburn, Virginia home and spent time in intensive care before being transferred to a standard hospital room. The incident has not deterred Bieniemy from contributing to the team’s preparation for the upcoming season, according to General Manager Brett Veach.
The Chiefs have accommodated Bieniemy’s situation by providing him access to live practice feeds, allowing him to observe drills and offer input from a distance. During one recent session, Bieniemy contacted Veach to relay coaching instruction to head coach Andy Reid regarding rookie running back Emmett Johnson. Veach emphasized that Bieniemy’s attention to detail and demanding approach to player fundamentals remain evident even as he tends to family obligations.
Bieniemy’s son, Elijah, 27, faces charges of malicious wounding, firearm use during the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office. Court records indicate Elijah is undergoing a mental health competency evaluation before any court appearance. Authorities report that two days before the incident, a person believed to be Elijah contacted police, claiming his parents had restricted his access to weapons and expressing concern about his inability to defend himself as a certified UFC fighter.
The 56-year-old Bieniemy is expected to remain with Kansas City as training camp intensifies this week. He previously coached with the Washington Commanders, Chicago Bears, and UCLA before returning to the Chiefs this offseason. Veach stated the team brought Bieniemy back specifically to elevate roster performance after last season’s disappointing 6-11 record, hoping his voice and expertise will restore the franchise to championship contention.
