Police K-9 Forces Entry Into Vehicle After Driver Refuses Surrender in 40-Minute Standoff

Vancouver Police Department released body camera and dash camera footage Thursday documenting a July 26 incident in which a K-9 officer breached a vehicle window to end a prolonged standoff with a motorist who refused to surrender. The 40-minute confrontation concluded with the arrest of Brandon Wells, who faces multiple charges stemming from the encounter.

Officers responded to reports of an impaired driver who had fallen asleep at the wheel and was reportedly inhaling from compressed air containers while operating the vehicle. Upon locating the suspect, police observed the driver continuing to use the cans and initiated a traffic stop. The driver fled the scene, leading officers on a pursuit that saw the vehicle strike curbs and accelerate dangerously through residential areas in apparent evasion tactics.

Police deployed a Grappler device to immobilize the vehicle after determining the driver posed an immediate hazard to public safety. Even after the car stopped, the suspect refused to comply with repeated commands to exit the vehicle. Over the subsequent 40 minutes, officers attempted multiple compliance strategies, including communication, a 40 mm less-lethal launcher and pepper ball deployment, all of which proved unsuccessful.

After additional warnings went unheeded, K-9 Midas entered through the driver’s side window. Officers swiftly surrounded the vehicle and took Wells into custody without further incident. Wells was booked into Clark County Jail on charges of attempting to elude police, driving under the influence, reckless driving and resisting arrest.
