Denver Jewish Community Grapples With Safety Concerns Following Primary Election

Members of Denver’s Jewish community have raised serious concerns about their safety following the primary election victory of 29-year-old Democratic Socialist Melat Kiros. Local Jewish leaders point to inflammatory rhetoric from Kiros, including statements attributing domestic antisemitism to Israeli policy and her refusal to characterize a local firebombing as an antisemitic hate crime, as contributing factors to an uptick in threatening incidents and apprehension among visibly Jewish residents.

Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman publicly criticized a reporter from Drop Site News during a Capitol Hill exchange, characterizing the outlet as hostile to Israel and dismissive of threats posed by Hamas, Iran, and Hezbollah. Fetterman reiterated his strong support for Israel and expressed enthusiasm for Israeli military operations against designated terrorist organizations.

Television personality Piers Morgan confronted Cornell University student Austin Franco after Franco stated he would not accept employment from someone of Jewish faith. Morgan denounced the remark as antisemitic, and Franco’s parents subsequently asked him to leave their home after he declined to apologize for the statement.

A New Jersey resident, Dan Sohail, received a six-month federal prison sentence for ramming his vehicle into the Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters in Brooklyn five times during a January incident. Sohail is expected to be released within one week of sentencing.
