A three-way race is shaping up for a competitive Miami-Dade County Commission seat representing District 8, which covers a significant swath of southern Miami-Dade County stretching across Homestead, Palmetto Bay, and surrounding communities. Incumbent Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins faces challenges from Martha Vega Hero, a nonprofit chief executive, and John Dubois, a former Palmetto Bay Vice Mayor.
Cohen Higgins has centered her campaign on addressing what she identifies as the district’s most pressing concerns: traffic congestion and transportation infrastructure improvements, along with housing affordability for residents. Drawing on her background as a trial lawyer, the commissioner emphasizes her analytical approach to fiscal oversight and budget management, noting her consistent scrutiny of county spending decisions.
Hero has prioritized collaboration between government and nonprofit organizations, coupled with budgetary transparency and agricultural preservation. She has pledged to protect the district’s Unified Development Plan, support agritourism businesses and local venues, and advocate for community recreation facilities alongside job creation and affordable housing initiatives.
Dubois declined to provide comment for this report but indicated his willingness to participate in future interviews should the race advance to a runoff election.
