Republican senators are preparing to advance contempt of Congress charges against Dr. Anthony Fauci following his refusal to answer questions during a subpoenaed appearance before lawmakers. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, who chairs the relevant committee, expressed confidence that sufficient votes exist to approve the measure and move the case to federal prosecutors.
During Thursday’s hearing, Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment rights more than 100 times rather than respond to committee inquiries. Paul introduced the contempt resolution Tuesday, stipulating that if approved by his Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, the matter would be referred to the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.
Paul has pursued Fauci for years over his role in pandemic policy and funding decisions, particularly regarding research in Wuhan, China. The senator told Fox News Digital he anticipates swift action once the committee votes, saying the DOJ referral would follow immediately upon passage of the contempt resolution.
Fauci, who previously directed the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, acted on counsel from his attorneys in declining to testify. President Joe Biden granted Fauci a full pardon covering actions taken between January 1, 2014, and January 19, 2025, prompting Paul to raise questions about whether such clemency shields individuals from contempt charges.
