Explosive Drone Discovery at Major German Airport Triggers Runway Shutdown, Escalates Hybrid Threat Concerns

German authorities discovered a drone equipped with explosives near a Ukrainian transport plane at Leipzig/Halle Airport late Tuesday, triggering an immediate runway closure and flight diversions. The discovery prompted officials to characterize the threat as representing “a new quality of danger,” marking a significant escalation in security concerns at the major European cargo hub.

Airport workers located the first explosive device near the south runway, leading officials to deploy an explosives-disposal robot for examination before the detonator was safely removed. A second unidentified flying object was spotted shortly before midnight, colliding with a cargo aircraft that had aborted its landing due to the runway closure and subsequently diverted to Hannover Airport, approximately 125 miles northwest.

The Ukrainian aircraft bore the nation’s blue-and-yellow flag colors and displayed the message “Be Brave Like Kherson,” referencing the southern Ukrainian region. German police launched a comprehensive investigation into both incidents while multiple flights were rerouted to alternative airports.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the incident as a “hybrid attack scenario,” emphasizing that an explosive-armed drone at an airport represents an unprecedented threat level. He noted that questions regarding the explosives type, drone origin and responsible parties remain under active investigation.

Dobrindt referenced the Joint Centre for Countering Hybrid Threats, which he established in June to coordinate federal and state security responses to espionage, sabotage and disinformation threats. He stated that previous assessments about heightened danger levels have been vindicated by this discovery.

Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, suggested Russian involvement in the incident, questioning “Who else could it be but Russia?” in remarks to Welt TV. A 2024 incendiary device fire at the airport’s logistics center has been suspected by Western security officials as part of Russian intelligence sabotage operations.
