The Los Angeles Rams hosted a formal workout for Aaron Donald on Wednesday as the Hall of Fame-caliber defensive tackle moves closer to a potential return to professional football. The 35-year-old participated in the supervised session at the team’s facility, marking a significant development in what could culminate in his comeback from a 2½-year retirement, according to league transaction records.
Donald has spent recent weeks conditioning at the Rams’ Woodland Hills training complex and away from the facility in preparation for a possible return to NFL competition. Head coach Sean McVay has maintained that the organization will afford Donald ample time to make his decision, though McVay indicated the team does not anticipate a final determination until after training camp concludes this week at Loyola Marymount University.
The prospect of pairing Donald with recently acquired pass rusher Myles Garrett has apparently energized the veteran defender’s consideration of a comeback. McVay expressed qualified optimism last Friday, noting that recent indicators suggest momentum toward Donald’s participation. The Rams will resume regular-season preparations Saturday at their Woodland Hills facility.
Donald’s retirement in March 2024 ended a distinguished 10-year tenure entirely with the Rams, during which he earned three AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards, eight All-Pro selections, 10 Pro Bowl honors, and a Super Bowl championship. Garrett, 30, has won two of the past three Defensive Player of the Year awards while with Cleveland and expressed enthusiasm about the potential partnership with Donald.
