The University of Akron football program announced plans this week to hand over play-calling duties to a fan during the team’s first offensive possession at home on September 12 against Robert Morris. The initiative represents an unusual step for a Division I FBS program, granting an actual supporter decision-making authority during live game action against a legitimate opponent.
Dr. Andrew T. Goodrich, Akron’s athletic director, framed the promotion as a means of deepening fan investment in the program. “We’re always looking for new ways to bring our fans closer to the program,” Goodrich said. “This is about giving one of our most loyal supporters a seat at the table, right alongside our coaching staff, on the biggest night of the season.”
The “Offensive Coordinator of the Game” promotion is restricted to current season ticket holders, who will be automatically entered into a random drawing. Each season ticket serves as one entry, with holders earning additional entries for successfully referring new season ticket purchases to the program.
Season tickets for the program range from $75 to $181 depending on seating location, making participation accessible to a broad fan base compared to major conference programs. The affordable pricing structure removes significant barriers for interested supporters seeking to participate in the drawing.
The selected fan will assume offensive play-calling responsibilities exclusively during the team’s opening drive of the contest, putting fan strategy directly against Robert Morris’ defense in an actual game situation.
