New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is under renewed scrutiny for his connections to Uncivilized Media, a Qatar-based outlet that researchers and advocacy groups say has disseminated antisemitic conspiracy theories. The controversy centers on Mamdani’s 2023 interview appearance on the platform and his previous social media engagement with the outlet’s content.
According to Fox News Digital’s review, Mamdani followed the account on Instagram through at least July 24, 2026, though he had unfollowed it by July 27, 2026. Interview clips from his appearance were shared as collaborative posts on both his account and the outlet’s account, a practice that extended the platform’s reach within his follower base.
The Anti-Defamation League and other experts on online antisemitism have documented Uncivilized Media publishing content that promotes traditional antisemitic narratives, including accusations that Jews and Israelis seek global domination, control media institutions, and pursue colonial expansion. A July 2026 video from the outlet exemplified this pattern, claiming Israelis were attempting to “colonize the world.”
Oren Segal, the ADL’s senior vice president of counter-extremism and intelligence, told Fox News Digital that the outlet regularly promotes “classic tropes about Jews.” While he clarified that the ADL was not accusing Mamdani of endorsing all the outlet’s programming, Segal said his appearance there “normalizes the rest of the content that is out there” and raises legitimate questions for concerned Jewish New Yorkers.
In his September 11, 2023 interview, Mamdani discussed Palestinian self-determination as “central to my identity,” framing it as a broader struggle for freedom and justice. He also drew connections between his upbringing in the Third World and his perspective on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, describing it as rooted in “empathy and solidarity.”
During a subsequent video posted days later, Mamdani stated that progressive values and Muslim beliefs share an “inherent solidarity” and identified himself as a socialist rather than simply progressive. He addressed internal debates within Muslim communities about their values and their compatibility with progressive causes including LGBTQ rights.
Segal suggested Mamdani could address concerns among Jewish residents by publicly denouncing the outlet’s promotion of antisemitic conspiracy theories. He noted that clarity on this matter would be particularly meaningful given perceptions among some in the Jewish community that their relationship with City Hall has deteriorated.
The renewed focus on Mamdani’s media connections follows his recent statement regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in which he called the leader “a war criminal” and “the architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people,” while noting he lacked legal authority to take action. Neither Mamdani’s office nor Uncivilized Media provided responses to requests for comment.
