Christina Hines, a special victims prosecutor, won her party’s primary election Tuesday night in the race for Michigan’s 10th Congressional District House seat. The Democratic Party is positioning Hines as the candidate to reclaim the district and narrow Republicans’ majority in the chamber, banking on her prosecutorial background and messaging centered on economic affordability.
Hines framed her professional experience as foundational to her candidacy in campaign materials, emphasizing her work protecting vulnerable populations from exploitation. “Congress has too many millionaires but not nearly enough moms who get things done,” she said in a statement outlining her vision for the office.
The district has historically favored Republicans while remaining politically competitive. Incumbent Rep. John James won his 2024 re-election with 51.1% of the vote against Democratic challenger Carl Marlinga’s 45.0%, following a 2022 race where James prevailed 48.8% to 48.3%.
James announced his decision to vacate the seat and pursue the Michigan governor’s office, citing his family’s immigration to the state for manufacturing and automotive opportunities. With an open seat now available, the race has shifted dynamics considerably.
Hines’s platform includes measures to combat inflation through enforcement against price gouging, raising the minimum wage, and defending federal programs including Social Security and Medicare from potential cuts. She has received endorsements from Marlinga and Sterling Heights Mayor Michael Taylor as she advances to the November 3 general election.
