Progressive Rep. Tlaib Wins Democratic Primary, Extending Left Wing’s Growing Power in Party

Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, a prominent member of the progressive “Squad” caucus and vocal advocate for socialist policies, defeated her Democratic challengers in Tuesday’s primary election for the 12th Congressional District. The victory positions her for a fifth consecutive House term and reflects the continuing ascendancy of the party’s left wing in recent primary contests across the nation.

Tlaib bested Michigan state legislator Shanelle Jackson and Inkster Mayor Byron Nolen to secure the Democratic nomination. Her triumph adds to a recent wave of progressive primary successes that have shifted the ideological balance within Democratic ranks and provided greater visibility to candidates aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America, of which Tlaib is a member since entering Congress in 2019.

The Democratic Socialists of America endorsed Tlaib’s candidacy, citing her record on housing, environmental protection, and international affairs. The organization has dramatically expanded its influence beyond established figures, backing multiple socialist candidates who have defeated longtime incumbents in recent primary contests across multiple states.

Tlaib’s success marks a reversal from 2020, when Democratic leaders blamed progressive messaging for disappointing midterm results. Progressives countered that their populist platform would expand the party’s appeal to working-class and marginalized voters, a prediction the recent primary outcomes appear to validate.

Tlaib will advance to the November 3, 2026 general election, where she is expected to prevail decisively. In 2024, she defeated Republican challenger James Hooper with 69.7 percent of the vote to his 25.4 percent.
