Bill Belichick’s shocking exclusion from the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s first-ballot class this week sent ripples through the NFL community, leaving former Patriots players including Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski stunned by the decision. The legendary coach’s failure to achieve first-ballot status despite his decorated career raised unexpected questions about the voting process and criteria used by Hall of Fame selectors.
Danny Amendola, a wide receiver who captured two Super Bowl championships under Belichick in New England, found the outcome difficult to comprehend. When asked whether Brady might face a similar fate when he becomes eligible for induction in 2028, Amendola flatly rejected the possibility, telling Fox News Digital he had never entertained such a scenario.
“There’s no doubt in my mind he will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer,” Amendola said while attending a USAA Salute to Service NFL Boot Camp at Patriots training camp. He added that dismissing the notion as “crazy to think about,” while acknowledging Belichick’s accomplishments speak for themselves despite the unexpected snub.
Brady’s Hall of Fame credentials appear unassailable by any objective measure. The quarterback holds the NFL records for Super Bowl rings with seven total, passing yards with 89,214, completions with 7,753, and touchdown passes with 649. Over his 23-year career, Brady started 333 consecutive games and is widely regarded as the sport’s greatest quarterback.
Observers have speculated that Belichick’s involvement in the Spygate and Deflategate controversies may have influenced voters, with Brady himself suspended four games related to the latter scandal. Should similar voting patterns emerge for Brady’s induction, the possibility of a first-ballot snub would represent an unprecedented development for a player of his historical significance.
Beyond discussing Hall of Fame matters, Amendola participated in the inaugural USAA event, coaching active service members from Naval Submarine Base New London, Naval Station Newport, Joint Base Cape Cod, and Hanscom Air Force Base through athletic drills including the 40-yard dash and three-cone shuttle.
Amendola expressed profound gratitude for military service, noting he had considered enlisting before receiving a football scholarship. “Without them, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do,” he said, emphasizing his appreciation for the sacrifices made by those in uniform.
